About the director

Eve Baswel (1995) was born and raised in
Maguindanao in 1995. She received her
degree in Communication Arts from Far
Eastern University. Her love for the spontaneity of visual arts can be seen through her works in photography and
cinematography. Her films and photos reflect the inherent absurdity, loneliness, and vulnerability of human existence. Her first feature film, ‘Tia Madre’, received eight nominations during the Cinema Originals 2019. The film won the award for Best Cinematography. She is set to direct her first miniseries Langit Lupa Impyerno with Epicmedia. Eve is also currently developing her second feature film, ‘Bato Bato Sa Langit Ang Tatamaan Magagalit’ (Heaven Help Us), with Los Otros Manila with John Torres as the producer. The team recently participated in the Full Circle Lab for Fiction.

Intention Note

Since 2013, under the leadership of Dominique Welinski and in partnership with the Quinzaine des Cinéastes, the Directors’ Factory has been supporting the emergence of new talent on the international scene. Each year, with the backing of a partner country, the Directors’ Factory brings together eight promising filmmakers, selected for the strength of their first or second feature film projects. In pairs, they co-write and co-direct four short films, which are premiered in May at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes in Cannes.

As a filmmaker, I find immense excitement in getting lost in the story and in the process. However, I often struggle to find my way back. Collaborating with my co-director, our producers, and our staff and crew has helped me realize the power of teamwork in bringing our vision to life. This experience has left me deeply grateful and filled with greater wisdom. - Eve Baswel

WALAY BALAY is the most collaborative work I've ever been a part of. This experience has taught me that when I open my heart fully, allowing the world and other souls to influence my being, don't lose myself; instead, I find myself in others. No matter how messy and challenging the collaboration process may be, we are humans after all, but when the souls start to sing in the same pitch, the beauty is unbeatable. What a joy it is to trust our team and witness, in calm, how they make our ideas blossom. I feel that the faith and love I've shared with my co-director Eve, every other crew member, cast, and producer; represent the true wisdom gained. Our film is the expression of our bonds. Thanks to the Factory, I've learnt to have deeper faith in other beings and nature.- Gogularaajan Rajendran
